Workshops

Have Panels. Will Travel. Part 1

All of you fabulous workshop students already know the joys of packing it all up and shlepping your stuff to a new venue to work.  Today I had the privilege and joy of doing just that-- sans workshop! I got to paint in Sandy's fantastic studio (jeeeeaaalooouuusss) over looking the water with fabulous women that I just adore! Advice for the day; if you are feeling stuck or uninspired, especially if you normally work alone, paint with friends! We all know and love the energy of a workshop or class with cool people, so create your own! Thank you Heather for making it happen and Sandy for being the gracious host. And Judy, so great to paint and hang out with you too. Next one is at my house. All I can offer right now is pool side on the ping pong table.  Haha But a new studio is in the works!

I'm continuing to travel this weekend with the perfect formula: supplies, intention, inspiration, a deadline and the best traveling companion. Stay tuned to see what happens. :D

Can I Just Say I Love Teaching?

I had the privilege and joy of teaching my advanced workshop to fantastic artists at the Art League of Daytona this past weekend! So proud of all you ladies!  Each of you has grown so much since our first workshops together... all of you Daring Greatly and challenging yourself to learn new techniques and new ways of seeing and creating. The world is such a better place with all that creative energy in it!

My next workshop is coming up in 3 weeks. Join me in Maitland for 2 days of collage, drawing, painting and fun!

2 Day Mixed Media Workshops

Drawing and Painting with Mixed Media Collage

Learn the joys of mixed media collage.  The workshop will address working with papers, fabrics, found objects, past art work, pencil and charcoal drawing, and acrylic painting.  The materials used will be the choice of each student, but students are encouraged to incorporate some of their own prior art work into new pieces. The objective of the workshop is to explore new mixed media techniques and excavate each student’s authentic voice in their art.

I encourage everyone to incorporate mixed media collage into what they already do! I will work with each of you on whatever style project you would like to work on whether it is faces, figures, landscapes, still lives or abstracts. We collage on the first day and then draw and paint on the second day. There are no set rules in my workshops. I try to create a fun time that introduces new techniques and a comfortable learning environment to enhance where you already are. All levels are welcomed!

Materials list;

  • 3 to 4 Wood panels, canvas boards or heavy paper to use a base. cheapjoes.com or dickblick.com is a great place to buy wood panels in all sizes.
  • Fabrics-- new and old, scraps, curtains, tablecloths, patterned napkins--anything that speaks to you. They don't have to be perfect, just smooth.
  • Papers --patterned, tissue paper, wall paper, maps, paper napkins. Japanese rice papers work best. Love paper from papersource.com
  • Found Objects- old letters, old book pages, stamps, ribbon, washi tapes, scrapbooking stuff, keys, pressed dried flowers….
  • Prior art projects that you are willing to let go of- watercolors, drawings, paintings, photographs…anything except oil paintings or inkjet photos.
  • Matte medium – at least 32 oz. We'll use a lot of this! Mod podge does not work for this.– I love Utrecht acrylic matte medium. utrechtart.com
  • Lots of soft vine charcoal, soft charcoal pencils and soft compressed charcoal.
  • Erasers like charcoal kneaded erasers
  • UV spray fixative. (Not workable fixative.)  I love Utrecht’s or Krylon’s versions.  utrechtart.com
  • Acrylic, latex or watercolor paints. I love Golden and Utrecht paints. If you are going to buy any paints for figurative work, I recommend Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold and Titan Buff by Golden.
  • Brushes including 2” finch (cheap) or house painting brush for gluing the collage down
  • Scissors and sharp utility knife

Advanced Drawing and Painting with Mixed Media Collage

This workshop is a continuation of my Drawing and Painting with Mixed Media Workshop. Prior exposure to collage either in that workshop or others is preferable but not necessary. The emphasis during these 2 days will be further developing drawing and painting skills on collage. Students have the option to collage during the first day (using papers, fabrics, and found objects) or bring in finished collages that are ready to be drawn and painted on. There are no set rules in my workshops. I try to create a fun time that introduces new techniques and a comfortable learning environment to enhance where you already are. All levels are welcomed!

Wonderful student show on Sunday at Daytona Art League! There were so many people there and I just loved seeing everyone's work displayed together. Even though the collage aspects of the work were similar, the end results of their work was not. Each artist brought their own voice to their pieces which makes me the proudest teacher! Congratulations ladies and thanks for inviting me to be a part of it! Can't wait for the Advanced workshop in October!
